Before going on vacation
always remember to call and confirm any reservations twenty-four
to forty-eight hours prior to departure. A valid photo ID will
be required upon check-in. When traveling out of the United
States to Europe, Asia, Africa and South America, a valid passport
is required. To remedy minor accidents, pack a small medical
kit with travel sickness medications, aspirin, sunblock, insect
repellent, tweezers, topical ointment and bandages. Resealable
plastic bags make excellent laundry and make-up bags. Pack snacks
or sandwiches in case of travel delays.
DHS Reminder: Temporary WHTI Accommodation Ending Soon
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is reminding
air carriers and the traveling public that the temporary Western
Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) accommodation allowing U.S.
citizens to travel by air within the Western Hemisphere using
a Department of State (DOS) official proof of passport application
receipt will end as scheduled at midnight on Sept. 30, 2007. For additional information, visit Department
of Homeland Security.
Passports & Visas
Travelers who have not applied for passports to date should
plan ten weeks for standard passport processing and two weeks
for expedited processing. Information on how to apply for a
passport, including how to expedite processing, is available
at U.S. Department
of State website. Applicants requesting expedited service
must write "EXPEDITE" on the outside of the envelope containing
their application.
The Department has committed additional resources and
personnel to meet the unprecedented demand for passports. Passport
production has hit record highs as the Department works diligently
to honor its mission and ensure that every citizen gets a passport
in time for planned travel.
The National
Passport Information Center (1-877-487-2778) remains open for
limited weekend hours to make emergency arrangements for travelers
departing in seven days or less. NPIC has expanded its business
hours and is now staffed Monday through Friday from 6:00 AM -
Midnight, Eastern Time.
Travelers can check the status of their pending passport applications online at the
U.S. Department of State website.
Information is normally available
online approximately four weeks after the application is submitted.
Those who have applied and are leaving within two weeks can send an email
inquiry to the U.S. Department of State
to check the status or call the National Passport
Information Center at 1-877-487-2778. Please
leave the telephone lines open for those with immediate travel needs.
